Barry Steeves

Hello. I grew up in Kansas, spent a few years ski bumming in Colorado and New Mexico, worked as an urban planner in such far-flung locales as Belfast, Northern Ireland and Washington, D.C., and finally came to ground in Northampton. My wife and I owned and operated the original La Cazuela Restaurant in Northampton for 18 years, then sold it in 2001 to a long time cook. We've happily taken root amidst this collection of endearing communities that each has its own appeal.

An important part of my life is the importance of home. I helped build a few houses in the early years, studied design of housing as an undergraduate and housing policy as a graduate student, designed some renovations and additions for myself and others, and designed our current home from scratch. I care about how a house becomes a home.

Equally important is how a home is a key part of a larger community. My community involvement has included serving on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County and CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture) as well as committee work for the Downtown Business Association, Northampton Chamber and River Valley Market food cooperative. I currently serve on the Central Business Architecture Committee for Northampton.
